Using a variety of buoyancy assisted exercise devices for the upper and lower extremities as well as the trunk; our therapists develop therapeutic exercise routines to maximize patients’ abilities. A patient who is partial weight bearing can perform more work in more planes of movement in an aquatic environment than on land. Patients with spinal disease can isolate separate body parts or work multi-joint exercise routines to improve total body strength. Patients with lower extremity injuries can maintain cardiovascular endurance by performing an upper extremity exercise routine and vice versa. Patients with a neuromuscular or rheumatologic component can commonly perform a greater amount of work with less discomfort in the water.

Underwater exercise is used as an important therapeutic tool on many of our non and post-operative patients. Therapists decide to use it prior to, or after conventional clinic therapy depending on desired results.

  • Increased Range of Motion due to waters buoyancy.
  • Decreased loading reducing joint injury.
  • Safe arena to progress weight bearing and gait training.
  • Pain relief due to muscle relaxation.
  • Muscular re-education to improve power, endurance or stability.
  • Allows for sports specific functional training.
  • Work hardening.

A variety of aquatic equipment and personal supervision ensures safety and patient compliance.

This arena also allows the PT/ATC to use creativity, which improves patient motivation.
